“I’ll remember the eggs”

“It was an emotional event for me,” said John Sturm, “very encouraging!”

John is one of our founding board members. He hasn’t been able to attend Breakfast for The Bridge since he moved out of Topeka over a decade ago. “I loved the stories, hearing how God is working.”

Breakfast for The Bridge is our annual fundraising event and celebration of what God is doing at The Bridge. On a beautiful Saturday morning in April, we gave an update on our programs, rubbed shoulders with supporters and volunteers, and raised nearly $45,000 by meeting a matching gift challenge from one generous supporting family.

It was a great morning!

One of my favorite things, however, was the scrambled eggs.

The eggs were my favorite not just because they were expertly prepared by Randy Lee, Ed Popkess and their team. They were a highlight because they were from The Bridge Farms.

The Bridge Farms is the title of a new project that we’ve been working toward for over a year. The project brings together three urban gardens, or “Farms,” in central Topeka, and one micro farm in southeast Shawnee County. From the micro farm our Life Buddies and their mentors collected thirty-six dozen eggs, washed and packaged them, and delivered them to Randy and Ed in the kitchen at FBC, where they were cracked, scrambled, cooked, and served to our guests at Breakfast for The Bridge.

So, I’m grateful for all that happened that morning—thank you to all who attended and gave financially!--but what I think I’ll remember best in eight years--when the first wave of our Life Buddies graduate high school--is the eggs harvested from The Bridge Farms.
